Grosse Pointe, Michigan School Beats out More than 12,000 Schools in Nationwide Showdown
DETROIT, Mich (April 6, 2015) — Think Through Learning, authors of Think Through Math (TTM), the award-winning web-based math instructional system for grades 3 and above announced Kerby Elementary in Grosse Pointe, Michigan as the winner in the Eighth Annual March “Math” Madness (MX3) national competition. During the ten-week contest, Kerby completed more than 470,000 complex math problems, more than 27,000 math lessons and logged nearly 4,000 hours on Think Through Math, nearly 900 of which were outside of the traditional school day.
More than 12,000 schools and more than 1.2 million students competed in the nationwide, bracket-style contest. Schools were judged on the number of lessons passed. Each week during the process, schools competed in head-to-head elimination rounds until the top math school in the nation was left standing. Kerby Elementary was triumphant after intense challenges from schools nationwide.
Sara Delgado, principal at Kerby Elementary commented, “Everyone in the Kerby Elementary Community is thrilled! We are proud of our students and teachers for the commitment they showed to the March Math Madness Tournament. Parents expressed the fact that they had to force some of their children to go to bed because they didn’t want to stop working on math. What a testament to the effort the students put forth as well as to the differentiation and high levels of student engagement that TTM provides.”
Representatives from Think Through Math will host a special event at Kerby Elementary School to recognize and reward the winning students with the March “MATH” Madness trophy, banner and awards. Each student will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal and certificate.
