Last week, Think Through Math (TTM) sponsored and exhibited at Utah’s very first STEM Fest held at the UCCU Events Center on the campus of Utah Valley University. During the three-day event, more than 12,000 students from area elementary, middle, and junior high schools attended and were encouraged to have hands-on experiences with math, science, and technology.
The purpose of the Utah STEM Fest was to bring students, families, educators, and business leaders together to showcase future opportunities in education and business, all while aligning STEM disciplines with tomorrow’s jobs and innovation. Organizers wanted STEM Fest to raise awareness and get kids passionate about STEM-related career fields.
Think Through Math helped to raise awareness through an interactive booth that showed attendees that math skills last a lifetime. We encouraged the kids to think about how math is used in many activities that they enjoy on a daily basis and how they could turn their passions into future STEM-related career opportunities. Kids were able to use Think Through Math and meet some of our teachers who were there in person, while the parents and teachers learned how the Think Through Math system combines live teaching, student motivation, and adaptive curriculum to engage students, improve math scores, and build student confidence.
One student who spent approximately 15 minutes puzzling out the answer to a difficult real-life math problem learned the value of self-confidence first hand. Once he finally completed the problem correctly, he excitedly said “I feel so good about myself right now!” It was a great moment that reinforced the value of Think Through Math and its impact on a student’s self-esteem.
Thank you to the STEM Action Center of Utah for putting on such a fantastic event, to the students, teachers, parents, and administrators who stopped by our booth, and to the staff members who helped make it all possible. We can’t wait for next year’s event!
